The Chicago Cubs took down the Cincinnati Reds in an embarrassing fashion on Saturday, and they rode the wave of Pete Crow-Armstrong brilliance all the way. PCA again strengthened his MVP chances with an excellent performance that included three home runs, six RBIs, and four runs scored. PCA has been an outstanding piece of the Cubs on both the offense and defense, and there's still weeks to go in the regular season.
Pete Crow-Armstrong made Cubs history in the process
This was the first time in Pete's career that he's put three homers on the score sheet in a single game, but I'd be willing to bet my house that it's not the last time that it happens. At only 24 years old, he became the youngest Cub ever to hit three dingers in a game. The opportunity for the star center fielder to get his fourth in a game and make Cubs history came, but by that point, the Reds had surrendered defeat and a position player took the mound. It could have happened, but it would have forever been soured by the lack of challenge.
To make the story even sweeter, Sammy Sosa told PCA prior to the game that he wanted three home runs. The very idea of Sammy Sosa manifesting home runs at Wrigley Field vicariously through PCA is something that puts a chill down my spine.
With Saturday's game, the race to the MVP title between PCA and Shohei Ohtani continues, but if PCA continues on the trajectory he's set for himself, the race won't be a long one. There's no denying that Ohtani is the real deal, and that he's one of the most exciting players the MLB has seen in generations. But there's also no denying that PCA is stepping up to the plate and putting up an exemplary performance. The lead-up to October baseball is always hectic.
Meanwhile, PCA and the Cubs continue to chase the Milwaukee Brewers, and with it, the NL Central title. Perhaps if Sammy Sosa can come to a few more games, the Cubs can just ride PCA all the way to the finish line.
