Patrick Kane could still be exactly what the Blackhawks need

Chris Chelios believes Chicago is one of the finalists, and a reunion could benefit both sides if the contract fits the rebuild.

Could Patrick Kane really come home to Chicago? According to Chris Chelios, it's definitely a possibility. The 37 year old forward is dwelling on free agency, and a reunion with the franchise he once called home could prove worthy of both his, and the Blackhawks time.

There's certainly an argument to be had on whether or not it's a great idea to bring Kane back, but the pros are certainly hard to ignore. He's a franchise legend, and he's regarded as one of the greatest American born players of all time. But he's also 37, and he's not the young explosive player he once was. But that's not what the Blackhawks would be paying for.

A reunion must fit the rebuild

The Blackhawks have been committed to giving their young players significant ice time and allowing for their team to develop as a single unit. Throwing Kane in there may be a bit of a monkey wrench, but the veteran leadership that he could provide would be an invaluable tool and asset to everyone involved. If Kane were open to a short term, inexpensive deal, it's possible that the team pulls the trigger. Provided it doesn't interfere with the club's long term goals, why not?

Kane wouldn't just be serving as an on-ice coach or mentor. Despite his age, he's still an effective winger. Last season Kane put up 57 points in only 67 games with the Red Wings. Adding Kane into the fold now would add a reliable stick on the outside that this team could desperately use.

The Blackhawks shouldn't sign Patrick Kane because of nostalgia. They should sign him because he can still produce, provide invaluable leadership, and help bridge the gap between the franchise's past success and its promising future. Not to mention it would be a massive fan-pleaser.
