The Chicago Bears recently announced that quarterback Miller Moss was signed to their practice squad, and then they immediately elevated him and Kaden Davis. The move suggests that Tyson Bagent won't be ready for Sunday's matchup against the Carolina Panthers, though the team has not officially ruled it out. To add mystery to the Bears' decision, Bagent has reportedly traveled to Carolina with the team.
The rules surrounding the 53-man roster can get a little murky, and for the average fan just watching every Sunday, the distinctions in the rules don't earn much attention. To put things simply, each NFL team submits 48 players that are eligible to play on game day. This occurs ninety minutes prior to game time. If an elevated player like Moss dresses, then he counts as one of the 48.
Miller Moss gives Bears another layer of protection at quarterback
Because Moss is not a regular member of the 53-man roster, the emergency quarterback rule cannot be applied to him. However, provided Bagent is cleared, and he dresses, this would then mean the Bears list Williams and Bagent as their two quarterbacks for the day, and since Case Keenum is on the roster, he fills the slot of emergency quarterback.
Keenum wouldn't automatically fill that spot, but that's the logical place. Chances are we won't know until just before game time, but given that Tyson Bagent has missed a week of practice and is listed as questionable, nobody would be surprised if Moss suits up come game time.
All of this is just background preparation, of course. If everything goes according to the Bears' plans, the only quarterback that takes the field should be Caleb Williams. Ideally, he'll take the field in the fourth quarter to take a knee in victory formation, but that remains to be seen.
With Week 1 finally arrived, the Bears look to find their first victory of the season on the road. The Bears hope Moss never has to leave the sideline, but his elevation keeps one unresolved injury from leaving them unprepared. Whether he dresses will provide the clearest indication yet of how much confidence Chicago has in Bagent’s availability.
