The Chicago Cubs leave Kansas City with the series win as they take another step closer to catching the Brewers for the NL Central. With Milwaukee taking another series win in Minnesota on Sunday, it was all the more important that the Cubs took theirs as well. Luckily for the Cubs, Matthew Boyd was on the mound. He was precisely what the Cubs needed to take the W after the Royals tied the series on Saturday.
Boyd has been outstanding since returning from injury at the end of June, and this installment was no different. Boyd threw for seven solid innings, only allowing two earned runs and striking out three. Boyd's 98 pitches were more than enough to give the Cubs room to flourish, and Boyd collected the Win.

The Cubs first half of the season was a roller coaster for fans. From multiple 10-game win streaks to a 10-game losing streak, and the pitching staff limping into the All-Star break, it was exhausting. But it wasn't half as exhausting for the fans as it was for Craig Counsell. Managing through all of those injuries speaks to how good of a manager Counsell truly is.
Pitchers like Ben Brown, Javier Assad, Colin Rea, and several more are the ones that managed to step up and drag the Cubs through the mud. It hasn't been an easy ride, but here we are in August with a fighting chance.
Unfortunately for Cubs pitchers, the outstanding performances are often muddled from the woes of the rest of the team. It doesn't matter how good the pitchers are doing if the Cubs aren't winning enough games to catch Milwaukee. And right now, the Brewers firmly hold the top spot in not only the National League, but in the MLB.
Milwaukee may still control the standings, but Boyd made sure the Cubs didn't lose ground in Kansas City. His seven strong innings gave Chicago the foundation it needed to finish the weekend with a series win.
