Matthew Boyd has been one of the best pitchers for the Chicago Cubs in 2026. Pitching has been such a delicate subject for the Cubs this season that for a while there, they seemed to be grasping at anyone who could bring stability to their rotation. The Cubs have used more pitchers this season than any other ball club, which is why it's so important that Matthew Boyd has remained on point since his return from injury back at the end of June.

Boyd has made nine starts since his return from a torn meniscus suffered at home whilst playing with his kids. In those nine starts, Boyd has thrown 55 2/3 innings, and only allowed 15 earned runs in that span. His season ERA may be 3.50 at present, but since his return from injury, he's thrown a 2.43. Across those nine starts, the Cubs are 8-1.
That loss was through no fault of Boyd, either. In that contest, Boyd threw for seven innings, allowing no runs and striking out five. He put the Cubs in more than a position to win. The Cubs only dropped the loss after a staggering home run from PCA put them on top before the bullpen wasn't able to hold up the victory.
With the season rapidly approaching the playoffs, the conversations are now starting to turn toward post-season rotations. Given the flurry of trades that the Cubs made at the deadline, surely manager Craig Counsell will wish to give ample time for his new arms time to acclimate to their new team before making any decision. But as things stand right now, the game 1 starting job is Boyd's.
Boyd's reliability has been a godsend for the Cubs. His experience and leadership in the dugout are key components of the operation the Cubs are running with their pitchers. Now, with much needed added talent on the mound, and stability from our home team guys, the Cubs are in a much better position to make a push to topple the Milwaukee Brewers from atop the National League.
