While he got bailed out in the end by an abysmal interception in overtime by New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson, Matt Eberflus had such a terrible performance running the defense of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday that he may have had a worse week than the Chicago Bears.
Eberflus was a train wreck of a head coach during his tenure in the Windy City. Given how coaching hires tend to work within the NFL, though, he found a job rather quickly as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. He did nothing to help make fans feel better about that hire in Week 2 after giving up 37 points to the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium.
Matt Eberflus Looks Like a Disastrous Hire in Dallas After Week 2
There have been plenty of decisions already made in Dallas this season that could be questioned. Eberflus and his defense look like the next area on the roster to be the topic of conversation at water coolers over the coming days throughout the state of Texas.
To put it bluntly, Russell Wilson carved up the Cowboys' secondary all afternoon long as he threw for 450 yards and three touchdowns before lobbing up an ill-advised prayer of a deep ball in overtime that Dallas came down with. After being held without a touchdown in Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, Eberflus and his defense made Wilson look like an MVP candidate in Week 2.
The secondary putting forth a performance as atrocious as this, just one week after the front seven gave up over 150 rushing yards to the Philadelphia Eagles, only shows how deep the issues go in Dallas right now. If the Cowboys cannot stop the run without opening themselves up to be eaten alive by the deep ball, Eberflus will be looking for another job sooner rather than later.
That job market will look a whole lot different for Eberflus as well. Franchises aren't as willing to hire failed coordinators to their staff as they are with failed head coaches.
