Longtime NFL Scout Sheds Valuable Insight on Bears' OC Hire
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Bears made a shocking hire for their vacant offensive coordinator position, hiring 28-year-old Declan Doyle. Doyle is coming from the Denver Broncos, where he spent the last two years as the tight ends coach.
Before becoming the tight ends coach with the Broncos, Doyle spent four seasons with Sean Payton as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints. The 28-year-old coach will not call plays next season in the Windy City as Johnson will handle those duties.
However, Johnson will likely look for Doyle to help with the game plan every week, which makes sense as the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator steps into the head coach role.
Many Bears fans were surprised by Doyle’s hire, given the other candidates available for the OC role. Longtime Greg Gabriel provided valuable insight on Chicago’s new OC, which should quell some fans' fears.
On Sunday night, Gabriel responded to a Twitter user, who wanted David Shaw to be Chicago’s next offensive coordinator. The longtime NFL scout said the former Stanford head coach would have been a veteran presence, but people who worked with Doyle believe he’s a wiz kid.
Eric Edholm of NFL.com wrote something similar about the Bears' offensive coordinator hire saying, "Doyle is considered an up-and-coming coaching star in the business." Chicago fans hope that's the case because it means the offense is playing at a high level.
After seeing how things played out with Shane Waldron earlier this season, things cannot get worse for the Bears’ offense. This season, with Waldron, Thomas Brown, and Chris Beatty at OC, the Bears were ranked 28th in scoring (18.2 points per game).
Despite not calling the plays, maybe Doyle and Johnson can bring new wrinkles and elements to the Bears’ offense to help take them to the next level in 2025.
