Josh Sweat would help Chicago’s defensive front, but the numbers behind the rumor do not add up right now.

The Chicago Bears are once again linked to Josh Sweat. A 29 year old veteran edge rusher who inked a 4 year deal with the Arizona Cardinals before last season. The Cardinals have since sold the house. They brought in Mike La Fleur as the new Head Coach, and ate $47.5 million just to release Kyler Murray. It makes sense why those eyes would next jump to Sweat, another valuable piece in the Cardinals system.

The Bears have been included in all pass rushing conversations for years. No matter how close it seems the Bears get to a true edge rusher, something always comes up that prevents it from becoming reality. The football gods simply don't want the Bears to have an elite rusher.

Chicago still feels one pass rusher away

Montez Sweat is an excellent playmaker who currently plays edge for the Bears, but with Tremaine Edmunds no longer with the team, they lack a natural opposite for Sweat. That's where Josh Sweat comes in.

Josh Sweat is a single year into a four year contract signed with the Cardinals, and you could make the argument that it's not going so well. Most players don't want to participate in a rebuild if they don't have to, and that goes doubly when its a residual player that didn't sign up for it.

This rumor is exactly that: a rumor. The Cardinals do seem likely to want to offload Sweat from their payroll, but it's highly unlikely that he'll come to Chicago if they do. According to Ovethecap.com, the Bears have just over $11 million in available cap space. That wouldn't even be enough to Cover Sweat's salary for this season.

At the end of the day, this rumor feels far more connected to offseason speculation than actual momentum toward a trade. The Bears would certainly benefit from another proven edge rusher, but the financial reality makes a move for Josh Sweat difficult to picture right now. Still, the fact Chicago continues to surface in conversations surrounding premier defensive talent says a lot about where expectations for this franchise currently stand entering the 2026 season.
