Latest Bears Report Could Spook Head Coaching Candidates
The 2024 season for the Chicago Bears has been a big-time disappointment. They were expecting to be a playoff contender this season and the hope was there at the beginning of the campaign. Chicago was 4-2 after six weeks, but they hit a massive wall.
The Bears have lost six games in a row, and the 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day was the final straw for Matt Eberflus. He was fired shortly after DJ Moore provided his request for the next head coach.
Even though Chicago's roster is loaded and could be an enticing destination for head coaching candidates, the latest report may spook potential candidates.
Bears News: There Are Mixed Reviews on Bears HC Job
There's a belief that the Bears opening will be the best option on the open market but ESPN's Jeremy Fowler is hearing otherwise.
"I'm also hearing mixed reviews on whether the Bears job will end up being the most coveted, as team president Kevin Warren said it would be. On the surface, he has an argument -- the Bears are well stocked with intriguing talent, including a quarterback of the future, and have a healthy cap outlook. But this is also a franchise that has had a lot of turmoil at the top over the past two decades, so prime candidates will inevitably have questions about the power setup between Warren and general manager Ryan Poles and how all of it affects the head coach. "
- Jeremy Fowler
The Bears have had six head coaches over the past two decades, with only Lovie Smith and Matt Nagy making a playoff appearance.
While that isn't the best when promoting a new destination, the biggest problem could be around the power structure of the team.
General manager Ryan Poles is also the head of football operations, but he answers to president Kevin Warren.
That means the next head coach will be No. 3 in the pecking order and will have to answer to Poles who then reports to Warren.
Not having that much power in the organization could be something that pushes candidates away from the Windy City and their history isn't giving them the benefit of the doubt.
