The Chicago Bears are getting their standout defender back. Kyler Gordon, who has been out with a hamstring injury since training camp, announced on Tuesday via ESPN's Courtney Cronin that he will be making his 2025 debut on Monday against the Washington Commanders.
Gordon expressed his frustration about missing the first four games of the season, and added, "I’ve been annoyed not playing. But like, mood has been good just attacking rehab, but definitely excited to be out and that’s all I been looking forward to is playing with my guys and helping the team."
Kyler Gordon Teases Monday Night Football Return
The 25-year-old defender's return will be a major boost for the Bears, who have been struggling with various injuries in the defensive backfield. Gordon has proven himself to be one of the best nickel corners in the NFL, earning himself a three-year, $40 million contract extension in the offseason. Last year, he was one of the most improved players in the league, putting together his best season since coming into the league as a second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Nick McCloud has been starting in the slot in Gordon's absence, and the veteran defender has understandably not been able to replace the production. In four games, McCloud allowed 11-of-13 completions and a 155.3 passer rating in coverage, while receiving a 47.1 defensive grade on Pro Football Focus, which places him as the 93rd-best cornerback out of 106 eligible players in the league.
Even if Gordon is slowly integrated into the lineup, he should make a huge difference compared to McCloud. Considering that he was questionable to play against the Raiders before the bye week, and that he was a game-time decision, Gordon should be more than ready to take on a full workload against the Commanders.
While Gordon's return will help, the Bears will still be missing Jaylon Johnson for at least a few more weeks. TJ Edwards, Austin Booker, and Grady Jarrett's statuses for Monday are still up in the air, so the Bears will likely continue to have a few key absences on the defensive side of the ball. Tyrique Stevenson, Jaquan Brisker, and Kevin Byard are off to solid starts under defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, and the Bears have forced seven interceptions through four games. Hopefully, Gordon can also hit another level as a ballhawk upon his return.
