Kiran Amegadjie Continues to Fall from Bears’ Good Graces

The Chicago Bears' offensive line has been a revolving door since head coach Ben Johnson took over as the head coach.

Revamping the position was a top priority last offseason as the Bears invested significant resources to bring in quality starters. That wasn't enough to maintain consistency in the position throughout the season, especially at left tackle.

As injuries and underperformances popped up, the Bears ended up having to rely on four different starters at LT. With Johnson heading into his second season in charge, there is no more clarity there than there was last season.

Yet, one thing is clear: the starting left tackle will not be Kiran Amegadjie. Not only did the Bears re-sign Braxton Jones and bring in Jedrick Wills Jr. this spring, but they have also been signaling that Amegadjie's time in Chicago may be coming to an end.

In Monday's NFL annual meeting in Phoenix, Johnson spoke to the media about the left tackle situation heading into next season. CHGO Sports' Adam Jahns reported what the Bears' head coach said, and it doesn't bode well for Amegadjie's future.

Johnson said that while the uncertainty in such a key position is obviously not great, there is now a chance to have a position battle at training camp. When he named players who have a chance to start, however, Amegadjie wasn't mentioned.

"Obviously, you'd love to have your long-term starter for the next ten years locked up. There's a lot of uncertainty right now, though... So we're going to have an opportunity right now for a lot of competition. I feel good about Braxton being in that fold, Theo (Benedet) being in that fold. We signed Jedrick Wills, who I think has got a lot of talent himself."

Interestingly enough, Johnson also said, "And you can't rule out the draft either," adding that they will "stay true" to their board and not force any pick. If that means selecting another offensive tackle, then the Bears will do that.

The Writing Is on the Wall for Kiran Amegadjie

This clearly suggests that the Bears aren't particularly thrilled with their options at left tackle as things stand now, especially as Ozzy Trapilo continues to recover from his season-ending injury. The fact that Amegadjie isn't even considered an option amongst this uncertainty speaks volumes about where the organization sees him.

Unfortunately, following the former Yale standout's career in the NFL, this is hardly surprising. Amegadjie's rookie season was one to forget, as he allowed eight pressures across 126 snaps, according to Pro Football Focus, resulting in a putrid 39.4 pass-blocking grade.

Amegadjie had a chance to impress the new coaching staff last year and earn a spot on the offensive line. Instead, he missed part of the offseason with a quad injury and never got back on track, riding the bench for the entire 2025 season.

Benedet and Trapilo played the lion's share of snaps there all season before Trapilo suffered an unfortunate injury in the playoffs. Joe Thuney was moved outside after that, and the veteran lineman should be considered the current favorite to start until Trapilo gets back.

This is obviously a disappointing spot to be for Amegadjie, who was once viewed as a potential cornerstone. He could still get a look at training camp before the Bears make their final decision, but it's hard to imagine the Hillsdale, IL native will be around for much longer after that.
