The Chicago Bears are in control of their playoff destiny, but they will need everyone to play their best down the stretch. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson has been able to do that since returning from injury, to the best of his abilities, but knows he can still do more to help this team achieve its ultimate goal.
Earlier in the week, Johnson revealed certain movements don't feel like they used to, indicating that he's not a 100% after missing 10 weeks due to core muscle surgery in September.
Even though he knows he's not back to his usual self, he believes he's getting closer. While that is great to hear from a fan's perspective, it isn't enough for Johnson. He wants to be the same impactful defender he once was.
"I'm taking the right step, and I'm getting closer, but in that moment, it’s just like all right, whatever, I'll take it. But I just want to get back to being dominant," Johnson said, via Chris Emma of 670TheScore.
Johnson didn't participate in training camp in addition to the missed games this season, so he still needs time to get his legs under him. And while he hasn't played up to par, the fact that he believes he's getting closer is positive and will play a big role as the regular season comes to an end.
Jaylon Johnson Believes He’s Getting Closer for the Bears
The Bears' secondary has been slammed with injuries all season long. They've had to play without Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tyrique Stevenson, and Terell Smith. That has forced them to lean on the depth they have. And while defensive back coach Al Harris has had this group playing their tails off, having Johnson at his best changes the entire defense for the better.
The defender has secured two Pro Bowlers and an All-Pro nod with the Bears and can shadow opposing No. 1 WRs at his best. To close out the regular season, Chicago has to play the Packers, 49ers, and Lions.
These are difficult matchups, but as Johnson continues to get more reps, he'll get his legs under him. During his best years in Chicago, Johnson provided this team with a difference maker in the secondary, so they know what he brings to the table.

Considering how shaky Johnson has looked the past three weeks, it's not a surprise he isn't back to his normal self, but that isn't stopping him. He's doing everything in his power to get back to Pro Bowl form, and that type of infectious mindset is exactly what this team needs.
Having one of your best players work like Johnson does every day to get better is a fantastic message to the rest of the team. Everyone around the league is dealing with injuries, but the excuses don't matter at this point in the season. It's all about sucking it up and being productive on gameday, which is the top priority for Johnson.
