The Chicago Bears revamped their wide receiver room this offseason, trading DJ Moore and letting Olamide Zaccheaus walk in free agency. They only signed Kalif Raymond as a replacement. Since Raymond has mostly been a depth player who is a return specialist, the WR3 spot on the depth chart seemed up for grabs.
This meant that Jahdae Walker could have been in line for a larger role in his second season. Towards the end of last season, Walker had capitalized on the increased snaps he got in Rome Odunze's injury absence and put together a couple of solid performances. In the last three weeks of the season, Walker had six catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns, teasing what could be in store in his second year.
Bears' Zavion Thomas Pick Complicates Jahdae Walker's Role
Then, the Bears made a surprising decision at the 2026 NFL Draft. With the 89th-overall pick, they selected WR Zavion Thomas out of LSU. This was widely considered a reach as Thomas was projected to be a Day 3 pick. Instead of filling their more obvious defensive needs, however, the Bears went with the speedster receiver.
Since Chicago reached so unexpectedly for Thomas when they didn't have a clear need for a receiver so early in the draft, the Bears are clearly high on the LSU product. They will give him a chance to earn the WR3 role, but that is far from a guarantee. Initially, they could use him in the return game as he led the SEC in kick return yards in 2024 and had one of the fastest 40-yard dashes ever recorded at the NFL combine (4.28 seconds).
Regardless of what Thomas' initial role is, it complicates Walker's place in the rotation. Last season, Walker was the fifth receiver on the depth chart. Despite his late-season emergence and the thinning WR room, he may still be the WR5 when the season starts.
While this may be disappointing for Walker, this challenge is nothing new for the 23-year-old. The Texas A&M product came out of nowhere last season after going undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft. After impressing in the preseason, he became the only undrafted free agent to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Then, he clawed his way into playing time in the final few weeks of the season and now hopes that this was enough to earn him consistent snaps in 2026.
