The Chicago Bears' starting three interior offensive linemen appear to be slotted in, with Logan Jones as a sixth lock being the backup center. However, the backup guard spots are still up for grabs right now. Jones is going to focus solely on center, so unless the team sees Kiran Amegadjie as a player who has tackle and guard flexibility, they will want to keep two guards.
Chicago Bears Interior Offensive Line Competition Gets Underway in Preseason
The names to watch are Luke Newman, Jordan McFadden, Caden Barnett, Kyle Hergel, and Wesley French. Jared Kump is also in the mix, but he will likely be the third-string center and a strong practice squad candidate.
Luke Newman
Newman is the most likely to make the team as the fifth interior lineman. He was a sixth-round pick in 2025 and played as a reserve in two games for the Bears during his rookie season. He also played 61 snaps at left guard and 87 snaps at right guard during the preseason, so his versatility should play into him being a valued asset.
Jordan McFadden
McFadden was a fifth-round pick back in 2025 by the Los Angeles Chargers. He spent two seasons with the Chargers but was let go and signed with the Chicago Bears in 2025. He played 179 preseason snaps for the Bears, all at left guard. So, Newman and McFadden could be the two starters in the preseason opener.
McFadden is returning for his second season; will he be able to hold off the competition for a second straight season?
Caden Barnett
Barnett is a trendy pick to make the roster as a rookie UDFA. He comes from Wyoming and has had a few moments in training camp that make him intriguing. Now, he has to prove it in the preseason. Barnett has played primarily right guard. So, the last spot competition could end up being Barnett at right guard, or McFadden at left guard.
Newman can play both, so he can complement whoever wins the spot.
Kyle Hergel
Hergel was a UDFA in 2024 who spent the past two years with the New Orleans Saints. He has three-position versatility and could make a push due to that. However, he will likely be in there to clean things up late in the preseason.
Wesley French
French was a UDFA from 2022 who spent four years with the Indianapolis Colts. He also have three position versatility.
