The Chicago Bears have used the last few months to see who will be a part of the roster for the 2025 season. Head coach Ben Johnson and his staff are new in town and don't have that attachment to certain players on the roster.
Everyone is going to have to prove themselves, and it looks like offensive lineman Kiran Amegadjie may not be on the roster in a couple of days.
Bears OT Kiran Amegadjie May Be on the Outs Soon
Amegadjie was drafted with the 75th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and was believed to be one of the players fighting for playing time, but that isn't the case.
At the beginning of the offseason, he was in the left tackle competition, but that quickly fizzled. The Bears have rookie Ozzy Trapilo and Braxton Jones fighting for that spot. Amegadjie has moved over to RT and is now fighting to carve out a spot there.
But they have Darnell Wright as the projected starter there, and Theo Benedet is someone who has emerged as a surprise candidate in the LT race. Bears OL coach Dan Roushar praised Benedet, saying, "There’s a lot to really like about Theo. He’s had probably as much improvement as any player we have in the group."
To make matters worse for Amegadjie, he was seen taking third-team reps in the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. According to Pro Football Focus, he finished with a 57 overall grade, 27.3 pass-blocking grade, and a 65.6 run-blocking grade in 33 total snaps.
That isn't what he needs to do, especially since he struggled in his outings last year. He posted a 40.3 overall grade (135th among 140 graded tackles), 39.4 pass-blocking grade (126th among 140 graded tackles), and 54.6 run-blocking grade (105th among 140 graded tackles) on PFF.
Throughout the offseason, fans have seen Trapilo and now Benedet get praise for their play and improvement. Braxton Jones, a 40-game starter, is one of the players in the running at LT.
Despite being a third-round pick just last year, there's no guarantee that he'll make the final roster with a new coaching staff running the show. He has one more preseason left to stand out to the coaching staff, but there's a good chance that the Chicago will part ways with him before the season kicks off.
They may look to bring him back on the practice squad but everything is up in the air.
