Update: Fields suffered a dislocated toe, but there's hope he will be able to play in Week 1, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. Our original story follows below:

Training camps have officially begun across the league this week, as the Chicago Bears look to make a statement within the NFC North with 2024 No. 1 pick Caleb Williams executing first-year head coach Ben Johnson's offense.

While vibes are high in the Windy City when it comes to the new-look Bears, the same cannot be said about the way training camp started for former first-round pick Justin Fields.

The ex-Chicago signal-caller is now QB1 for the New York Jets, and he left fans holding their breath during the team's second practice of training camp after needing to be carted off the field during Thursday's practice with an apparent injury, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter.

It is still too early to know the official diagnosis of the injury to Fields, but it appears as though he avoided anything too serious. Following Thursday's practice session, Jets head coach Aaron Glenn confirmed that Fields is dealing with a right toe injury but could not discuss the severity of the issue.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reports the injury occurred during a passing play where Fields was rolling right and threw an incomplete pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert before going down and remaining on the field until he received assistance from a trainer.

While this doesn't seem like any major concern for the Jets, the true severity of the injury won't be known until further testing is done.

The cupboard isn't bare behind Fields on the depth chart; veteran Tyrod Taylor is his backup and took over after the former Bears QB was forced to leave the field with an injury. Having a veteran like Taylor on the roster is great, but he is a backup for a reason at this stage of his career.

Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with New York this March and was named the starter just over two weeks later. If Fields is forced to miss time with this lower leg injury, what was likely to be a tough situation for the Jets this season following the Aaron Rodgers experiment just became that much more difficult.

Over his four-year career, Fields has started in 44 of the 50 games he has appeared in. His statistics, however, have been a bit of a mixed bag. The former Ohio State Buckeyes standout has thrown for 7,780 yards and rushed for another 2,509 yards. He has thrown 45 touchdowns and has rushed for another 19 touchdowns.

Those are strong totals for a player with four years in the league. The biggest issue with Fields, however, has been turning the ball over. The QB has 31 interceptions to go along with those 45 touchdown passes, and he has fumbled the ball 44 times, losing possession on 12 occasions.

A No. 1 quarterback simply can't be that careless with the football if they plan on winning anything of significance in the NFL. With Fields already facing those issues when healthy, being forced to miss time with an injury won't help him work his way beyond that issue.

Hopefully, the former Bears starter avoided any major injury on Thursday. Football fans will have to wait and see what the doctors have to say before anyone knows what the immediate future holds for Fields and the Jets.
