When the Chicago Bears signed safety Coby Bryant in free agency, there were some questions about the need and fit. They paid him a good bit of money after letting both Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker walk in free agency. The thought was that they could have had both starters from last year for less than one starter in Bryant.

However, Dennis Allen made it clear that there is a specific reason why they sought out Bryant over the other options. Allen noted that his playing style is what the team needed.

Chicago Bears love what they are getting from safety Coby Bryant

Bryant added that he wants to be a leader of the defense and that he wants his energy to rub off on the other players.

Between Bryant and Allen, the two made it clear that while his play on the field will be valuable, it will be his impact on the other players around him that makes him so special for the Bears.

Byard and Brisker were fine starters, and Byard brought a lot of the leadership that Allen is talking about. However, Allen inherited both of them. Whether it was the injuries for Brikser of the age for Byard, they did not see a long-term future in either of those options.

So, it makes sense that they would go out and look for an upgrade. Bryant is younger, more reliable on the field, and he will bring the message that Allen wants off the field.

Considering Bryant is going to make as much as the two previous starters combined, the team is clearly looking for more impact from the room. They also have first-round pick Dillon Thieneman in line to start next to him.

While he is just a rookie, he went so high in the draft because the expectation is that he can get on the field right away. If they can have Thieneman hit his first-round value while learning beside Bryant, this group could end up being a lot better than many are projecting

The group is a question because the names are new, but Chicago sees a much-improved duo, and a duo that fits exactly what Allen wants. Do not be surprised if Bryant gets buzz for being a defensive captain even if it is his first season.
