Chicago Bears offensive tackle Darnell Wright is starting to get the recognition that he deserves. Wright has been slowly ascending in the NFL, but is now widely viewed as one of the ten best offensive tackles in the NFL.
Damell Wright is One of the Best Players At His Position
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN polled executives, scouts, and coaches across the NFL to find the ten best players at each position. After being unranked on this list last year, Wright came in as the sixth-best offensive tackle.
After Penei Sewell joined Tristan Wirfs over on the left side, Wright officially came in as the highest-rated right tackle in the league. He edged out Lane Johnson, who dropped from third to seventh, mostly because of the injuries he has suffered.
Johnson is 36, and Wright is 24 years old entering this year, so it appears that the two ships have passed in the night, and Wright will now widely be viewed as the best right tackle in the NFL.
Wright has not missed a start due to health in his first three NFL seasons. He hit the ground running and was a Week 1 starter during his rookie year. While his play did not significantly improve from his first year to his second, he did set the bar significantly high in year one. So, it was hard to beat that performance.
However, his third year was by far his best season. He became a staple of the offensive line, and a player that the team built game plans around. He earned second-team All-Pro honors.
Now, he is also being honored as the best right tackle, and only behind five left tackles as the best overall tackle. This is great timing for Wright, who is about to enter contract negotiations.
The Bears can let him play out his fourth year knowing that he is back in 2027 on the fifth-year option. However, every game that the team lets Wright play is a chance for him to add dollars to how much he will make on his next contract.
Chicago would be smart to get ahead of any further rise in his play and pay him now, before his price tag continues to rise.
Ryan Poles has not had the best track record in the draft and has had a few misses early on as well. However, Wright has been a great pick.
