Cubs' win streak ends at 10, but Craig Counsell already has eyes on bigger goal

Chicago suffered a rough loss in Texas, but Counsell's postgame message showed exactly why the Cubs remain in control of the NL Central.

The Cubs win streak has been snapped again, this time falling at the hands of the Rangers. It feels abrupt when a streak this large comes to a close, but it's far more abrupt when it happens for the second time in a season and it's not even mid may yet. The Cubs have built formidable momentum in their campaign to conquer the NL Central, and they've emerged from their reverie 3.5 games in first place.

Even though the Rangers just delivered a spanking, Craig Counsell's tone after the game never sounded upset or even frustrated. The streak may be broken, but that doesn't mean the Cubs don't need to turn the page. The MLB is a marathon, not a sprint, and the likes of Counsell know that from experience.

Good teams move on quickly

The Cubs managed only four hits in the loss, while right hander Edward Cabrera alone gave up seven. This marks Cabrera's first loss of the season, and a significant departure from the pitching success the Cubs have been enjoying. The Cubs went 0-13 with runners in scoring position, and the Rangers scored in five separate innings. That's the kind of pressure the Cubs are used to exerting themselves, it's the kind of pressure that's allowed two ten-game win streaks to flourish.

Despite the tough loss, the Cubs remain 3.5 games above St. Louis in the NL Central, and they also remain tied with the Atlanta Braves for the best record in the MLB. The NL Central has been the best division in baseball through the first month and a half of the season. Having a cushion of that many games this early can make all the difference in the world as the pressure of the season carries on.

The Cubs may have dropped their streak, but that doesn't mean they won't have the chance to immediately make the difference. They still have the chance to win the series tomorrow. Lingering on a single game is damaging to a franchise. It's imperative to move on, and that starts with the Manager. Craig Counsell is doing exactly what he needs to right now when he looks toward the future instead of dwelling on today's defeat.
