Pete Crow-Armstrong has been named the National League Player of the Week. The announcement comes as no surprise given how well he's been playing. Not just lately, but PCA has captivated the attention of Cubs fans everywhere for a reason. A .440 batting average doesn't happen by accident.

PCA may be named the player of the week, but does he have good enough numbers to be in the NL MVP conversation? In addition to his .440 batting average, he's posted a .481 OBP, on top of an impressive 1.401 OPS. It's important to highlight that this isn't an isolated hot streak. This is yet another milestone during a breakout season where PCA shows the baseball world exactly why he's becoming known as one of the most valuable players.

The Cubs are getting far more than elite defense

Nobody is going to be astonished that PCA has earned this accolade. Despite being known around the league for his impressive skills in center field, Crow-Armstrong has also shown his prowess in the batters box. He's been a menace to pitchers and catchers alike on the basepath, and he's producing truly middle of the order numbers.

The emergence of a player like PCA has thrown manager Craig Counsell for a loop. PCA has quietly become a player that can change an entire game with one swing. Pitchers are now having to account for him in the lineup, and that's in addition to Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ, and Nico Hoerner.

MVP discussions are normally reserved for players that make a significant impact in all phases of the game. PCA not only meets the criteria, but he's now securely in a position of leadership in the Cubs dugout. A few more weeks like this one, and PCA will not only have a shot at the top title, but he'll have a real case for it.

Player of the Week honors are nice, but they're usually earned through sustained excellence rather than one hot stretch. Crow-Armstrong has spent all season proving he's more than an elite defender, and if he keeps producing at this level, his name will continue to climb the National League MVP leaderboard.
