The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of a categorically bad losing streak, where they've been hitting new levels of low. With Monday's loss to Pittsburgh, that makes nine in a row that the Cubs have dropped. May has turned out to be a rough patch for the entire team, and it's beginning to look dire.
The Cubs suddenly look nothing like the team that dominated April
The Cubs turned heads all of April with their pair of ten-game win streaks, but their fall from grace has turned even more. In their last 14 games, the Cubs have a combined .183 batting average. This abysmally bad statistic is contributed to by Moises Ballesteros, a young designated hitter that has put together an impressive .068 batting average. Despite clear reason to remove Ballesteros from the lineup, Counsell has refused to do so.
With Matt Shaw being moved to the Injured List, this caused natural room for the Cubs to call up a prospect to shake up the lineup. With the normal guys all slipping into a funk at the same time, its normal to see the club bring in a fresh face to try to build momentum from elsewhere. Though Pedro Ramirez and Kevin Alcantara have performed well, they haven't been the catalyst the Cubs have hoped for.
The Cubs have put together a collective .574 OPS over the last 14 games. That's the worst in baseball, and it's not even close. If the Cubs have any wish to participate in October Baseball, they'll need to perform better than this. It may seem obvious to say, and October seems so far away, but this losing streak has quickly become the black stain on the season that is really difficult to ignore.

Cubs offense slashing .183/.289/.285
Their .574 TEAM OPS in that span is MLB-worst and 46 points LOWER than 2nd-worst Angels
Hard to find a lower, longer cold streak than this one.
Every team goes through a tough section of the schedule. It's a fundamental part of baseball, especially when you're in the middle of a 162 game season. What makes this different in Chicago is that the systemic issues that the Cubs did so well at covering up have suddenly become impossible to ignore.
Whether the Cubs can pull out of this remains to be seen, but streaks like this are normally snapped in a casual manner. The Cubs spent April looking like one of baseball's most dangerous teams, but unless the bats wake up soon, this collapse is going to define far more than just one bad month.
