Cubs losing streak reaches alarming point despite Colin Rea's strong outing

Chicago finally received the pitching performance it needed, but the offense completely disappeared again.

The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of a seven game losing streak, the longest of the season so far. This is familiar territory as a Cubs fan, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating. Manager Craig Counsell announced "shake-ups" to the roster, with the team calling in top prospects Pedro Ramirez and Kevin Alcantara.

Many fans were dismayed to see that despite this announcement, despite acknowledging needing a change, Moises Ballesteros (22), who entered yesterday with a .073 batting average, was still eating the designated hitter spot. It makes many fans question what the goal is with him, because with only three hits in 42 at bats, maybe it would be best to designate him for something else.

Colin Rea finally gave the Cubs the start they desperately needed

Colin Rea had a solid outing of pitching with seven innings thrown only allowing three earned runs on four hits. Given the state of Cubs pitching recently, this was a breath of fresh air. Unfortunately, the Cubs were unable to bring their bats around to support Rea in his mission to win the game. Three hits in a whole game simply isn't enough to take home the win.

Despite the seven game losing streak, despite losing their fourth series in a row, the Cubs still sit only 2.5 games out of first place. The Brewers have been doing very well, but they're not invincible. The important thing to focus on now is the reality of the season, and understanding that the baseball season happens in phases. Panicking now would only cause the current skid to get worse.

Seven losses is unacceptable for a team that has playoff aspirations. This has been a major setback in an otherwise promising start to the season. It's not become a deep enough hole to fall into, but it also is getting to the point where it may be deepening too quickly. Before too long, Craig Counsell will need to have some answers. But if he continues to put .073 batting averages into the lineup, fans will begin to turn on him.

The Cubs are running out of room for excuses, but not out of time. How they respond over the next week will say a lot about what this team actually is.
