The Cubs announced several more roster moves today, and it's not looking great for the Cubs pitching staff. At this point, I'm genuinely under the impression that the Cubs have upset the baseball gods, and they're smiting the Cubs season by taking jabs at the pitchers. Today, the Cubs have announced that Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown both have moved to the IL.

Losing a single starter is something the Cubs could consider routine by now, but losing two in the same announcement is a different level of brutal. Ben Brown is the particular loss here, as he has been an arm that the Cubs have found salvation in. He was thrust into a starting role earlier this year, then remarkably found stability in an environment not exactly conducive to consistent pitching.

Cabrera has been on and off the IL this season for a blister on his finger. But his absence has been a bit of a blessing in disguise. Cabrera has collected a 5-4 decision record this year, but his 5.10 ERA is really what has hurt the Cubs.

Ben Brown is the loss that should concern Cubs fans

Brown has been a beacon of stability for a team that has had desperation on the agenda for months. From the high highs to the low lows, pitching has consistently been a concern for the Cubs. The Cubs transaction wire is a plethora of minor league pitchers being signed, released, DFAd, and moved around. The front office is desperate to get pitching help in, and it's shown.

This news comes at the worst possible time. The Cubs are due for a four game series against the Mets to set them up for a three game series against the Brewers. The Cubs have a real shot to make up some ground they've lost as they've been slipping, but the whole thing hinges on the Cubs winning now. The chance to sneak in some wins against easy competition in New York has never been more important.

The Cubs have managed to survive one pitching injury after another this season, but there is a limit to how much any contender can withstand. If Ben Brown is sidelined for an extended period, the Cubs may finally discover where that limit is.
