May Baseball has finally arrived, and with it, the Arizona Diamondbacks are taking a trip to Wrigley where the Cubs are taking them on for a three game home stand. The Cubs open the new month on a two-game win streak, closing out April on a high note. The month itself was highlighted by a 2-1 series win over the Padres and a 10-game winning streak that was ultimately snapped by the Dodgers.
The Cubs performance in April may have been strong, but it wasn't enough to top the National League Central. As of May 1st, the Cubs still rest one full game behind the Cincinnati Reds with the St. Louis Cardinals hot on Chicago's tail. Chicago fans hope to see their team take the top spot in the division this month, but that's easier said than done.
This is a series the Cubs should control at Wrigley
The Diamondbacks are worse on the road than they are at home, and they've lost six of their last ten games. Early season woes are something all teams have endured at one point or another, but the Diamondbacks have dropped several high scoring losses in the last few series. Not to mention being accustomed to dry Arizona weather as opposed to chilly spring weather in Chicago.
This places the Cubs in a good position to take this series and place it in the win column. But that advantage won't be the weapon it seems unless the Cubs execute in multiple key areas. The Cubs have shown the ability to score in blocks, and additionally the Diamondbacks pitching staff has been on the ropes. If the Cubs can prevent Arizona's pitchers from settling in, it can keep the their bats moving.
The Cubs are stellar at home, and the Diamondbacks struggle on the road. Taking advantage of the rough Chicago weather and showing whose house it is could make the difference in the series. Showing that chilly and damp conditions don't affect them is a trait of Midwest teams, not teams from the desert.
The Cubs don’t need to prove who they are in this series, but they do need to reinforce it. Against a team still searching for consistency, this is the kind of matchup that good teams handle without hesitation. If Chicago takes care of business, they’ll keep themselves firmly in the thick of the NL Central race.
