Cubs left handed veteran Matthew Boyd looks like he's ready to come back to Wrigley! The 35 year old starter is a much needed arm on a pitching staff that's been in tatters frankly all season long. Boyd recently made a rehab start with the South Bend Cubs, the double-A affiliate of the Cubs. Boyd threw for four innings and struck out seven in his brief time on the mound.
Boyd has been sorely missed in the Cubs rotation since he went down in early May. Since then, the Cubs have also lost Jameson Taillon, causing Ben Brown to be a consistent presence in the rotation, and Javier Assad, despite the fact that the latter has been sent down to Triple-A Iowa multiple times this year.
Matthew Boyd's return could not come at a better time
With the All-Star break rapidly approaching, the Cubs are doing everything they can to stay afloat. To not sugar coat it, they're doing absolutely everything they can to not panic on a ship that's being held up by confetti, a paper clip, and an avocado. With the Cubs in desperate need for pitching stability, Boyd's timely return could not be more welcome.

Not only does Boyd seem healthy to return, but his four innings in his rehab start saw four scoreless innings and seven strikeouts! In his first rehab start in over a month, he seems to have checked every single box that the Cubs needed to see.
Adding a proven veteran back into the rotation allows everyone else to slide more into natural spots, giving Chicago a much-needed sense of structure and normalcy where there hasn't been any in months. The Cubs have been dealing with an offense problem as well, and Boyd could very well be the spark the pitching staff needs to usher in some stability.
This doesn't necessarily mean that the Cubs are suddenly going to become buyers at the trade deadline. But it also pulls one additional weight off of the shoulders of management and the front office. With the Brewers firmly remaining several games out in front of the rest of the NL Central, the Cubs will still have quite the mountain to climb.
