The Chicago Cubs have finally snapped their losing streak, the only time of the season they've dropped more than three in a row. The win came after two straight losses at the hands of the Atlanta Braves, the formidable best team in the MLB.
The Cubs went on two different 10 game win streaks throughout April and May, and if you view it from the exterior, everything looks great. But when you scratch beneath the surface, you can see that the Cubs are being held up by thin pillars. Four losses in a single month is a setback yes, but a survivable one. Especially when the losses are arriving following two large win streaks.
The timing is poor because of who the opponents were. The Braves represented a figurative measuring stick for the Cubs, and unfortunately for them, the magic that propelled the win streaks didn't show up when it counted.
The Cubs needed a break and finally delivered on
The Cubs have been bringing their fans on an emotional roller coaster all season, and these games that have ended in the eleventh hour only adds to the stress. When a team has a meteoric rise, the expectations can soar even higher seemingly overnight, and that's exactly what's happening here. The Cubs achieved substantial success in April and May, and as a result, the League's eye is upon the north side.
This is where the Cubs must emerge as leaders among not just the NL Central, but among the league. A loss at the hands of the best team in ball paints a target on the Cubs back. Especially when the Cubs were not only expected to go toe to toe with them, but they were actually favored.
Now, after a four game losing streak and a slight redemption in game 3, the Cubs are exposed, and it wouldn't be surprising if many in baseball think the Cubs frauds. Narrowly avoiding a sweep is a good thing, but many critics are claiming that this is where the Cubs fall apart at the seams. If the north-siders have any hope of hanging onto the NL Central, they'll need to step up, or else it may be another season of trailing in the dust left behind by Milwaukee.
