During a stretch of baseball the Cubs have not accomplished in nearly a century, Craig Counsell pointed toward one defensive play from Nico Hoerner as the perfect snapshot of the team’s identity. There's good reason why so many before have referred to Hoerner as the engine of the Cubs, and Counsell's comments confirm what we're all thinking anyway.

The Cubs are in the midst of a second ten game win streak, where the atmosphere surrounding the Cubs has reached a historical high. Nico Hoerner, the man they signed to a six year contract extension, may not always be the loudest member of the team, but he's frequently the embodiment of how the Cubs are playing.

“That’s Nico. I mean, if there’s a play maybe they show about Nico’s career, you know, they should show that play, because that’s just who he is. That was a great play.” -Craig Counsell

Nico Hoerner continues defining the Cubs' Identity

In the top of the seventh inning, Nico Hoerner took advantage of a defensive blunder to turn a routine ground out into an infield double. Even though the Cubs had a lead in the game and it was late, Hoerner showed no hesitation in his will to take an advantage when he saw the opportunity. This is exactly the kind of attitude that has driven the Cubs to holding the best record in baseball right now.

The Cubs are now the first team since the 1955 Dodgers to have multiple 10 game win streaks in a single season, given that the Cubs already achieved another similar streak in April. It's also the first time the Cubs have done it Since 1935.

With the Cubs this successful this early in the season, many fans are on the edge of their seats worried that their team is peaking too early. That concern may exist, but the Cubs continue showing signs of a team built for sustainability rather than a short hot streak. As Counsell’s comments about Hoerner showed, this run has been fueled by clean baseball, smart decisions, and consistent effort nightly.
