The Detroit Lions are going to need to find cornerback help after releasing former first round pick Terrion Arnold. The Chicago Bears are one of a few teams with excess cornerback depth at this point in the offseason. It could lead to a rare inter-division trade.
Chicago Bears could trade a cornerback to the Detroit Lions
The Bears have expressed frustrations with both Kyler Gordon and Tyrique Stevenson last year with their new coaching staff. They also have the depth to move on from both.
In the case of Gordon, the team was frustrated with his injuries. When he is on the field he is highly regarded in the slot, and the Lions have seen that firsthand. If they are more comfortable with his health questions than the Bears they can make a trade.
Detroit has Roger McCreary projected to start in the slot, but McCreary also has experience on the outside, so they could push him outside and add Gordon. The Bears could save a good amount of cap space, get a pick, and move on from a player who is not in their plans next year. Chicago drafter Malik Muhammad in round 4 and all the talk out of OTAs is that he will step into the slot over Gordon after his rookie season. That would be a nice win to move on from Gordon and give Muhammad a look.
Meanwhile, Stevenson is due a contract after this year. He is on the end of his rookie contract and the new coaching staff is now the group who drafted him. They tried to bench him last year, but they continually needed the depth. However, they are hoping to be deeper this year with Jaylon Johnson and Terell Smith healthy.
Speaking of Smith, he is another option that could be traded. He missed all of the 2025 season and has mostly been depth, so they might not get a big return. However, he is another player who is on the last year of his rookie deal. Beyond that, he is not attached to the current coaching staff.
Chicago might not get a lot for him, but they do not need much for him. They can just move on and give a player the coaching staff picked out more chances.
Whether it be Gordon, Stevenson, or Smith the Bears have plenty of options to trade the Lions. The question will be whether the two rivals can come together.
