The Chicago Bears take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night for the primetime game, and with Caleb Williams sidelined, this one could get decided in the margins. There are plenty of factors at play for this one, but Chicago's decision at quarterback sits front and center. With Tyson Bagent clearing concussion protocol on Monday, and Case Keenum having taken practice with the first team all week, the matter is still up for debate.
The Bears injury report throughout the week included more than just Williams and Bagent, though. Kyle Monangai made an appearance for his second week in a row, though this time it was listed for a knee issue rather than the hamstring issue he was previously listed under. The Bears didn't practice on Thursday, but Monangai resumed full participation on Friday and Saturday, and carries no designation headed into Monday.
Santos is good to go after a surprising injury report appearance
Cairo Santos also made a surprise visit to the injury report listed with a right hip issue, though Santos himself said he was only sore from kicking water-logged footballs during Week 2 against the Vikings. With no backup placekicker in the Bears system, the team would have signed another kicker prior to Monday. Given Santos had returned to full practice by Saturday, he should be ready to go come game time.
Head coach Ben Johnson said on Friday that Tyrique Stevenson had been able to participate more extensively than previously thought, and accordingly was listed as a full participant on the Saturday report. Stevenson left the Vikings game during the fourth quarter and didn't return, so this should be viewed as a dodged bullet.
Grady Jarrett was listed on the report, but it was indicated that it was a non-injury related rest day. This is fairly routine, and is nothing to worry about. Joe Thuney also had a rest day, but by Saturday, both Thuney and Jarrett were listed as full participants.
Noah Sewell and Shemar Turner have both been residents of the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but the Bears have initiated their 21 day practice window. Both are listed as out for the game on Monday night, but their presence on the practice field is a good sign.
While there may be several designations on the injury report that most fans wouldn't wish to see, it does also show some hopeful signs. Nobody is throwing a parade for a perfectly clean report like Week 2, but given how the week started, Bears fans will take it. The quarterback question is real, and it weight upon everything. But Stevenson is back, the line is intact, and Santos is ready to go. That's a better spot than anybody expected just a few days ago.
