The Chicago Bears' post-draft needs are a bit obvious to most fans of the team. They entered the draft needing an edge rusher and left the draft without selecting an edge rusher. Dante Fowler just signed, so the number of edge rushers available is starting to shrink. Who is the best fit for the Bears?
Will the Chicago Bears sign an edge rusher before training camp?
Tyler Dragon of USA Today went through some of the top free agents available and pinned a team that should sign them. For the Chicago Bears, he has Hasson Reddick as a good fit.Â
While it is true that the Bears need an edge rusher, and Reddick is one of the more talented available, it is not quite the perfect fit. Reddick is a former off-ball linebacker who has transitioned to an edge rusher. He hardly rushes with his hand down, and run defense is not a part of his game. This is not a Dennis Allen fit.Â
He always has his rushers attack with their hand down and looks for long-armed run defenders who can also rush the passer. They already have Austin Booker, who is a designated pass rusher, so Reddick would not be a strong fit for the Bears. That does not mean that the team should avoid edge rushers, though.Â
Cameron Jordan has been linked to the Bears often because of his connection with Dennis Allen, going back to the New Orleans Saints. The questions with Jordan are whether he still has the juice at his age, and whether he would play for another team given his long status with the Saints. If he did leave New Orleans, it might be because of Allen, though.Â
Joey Bosa and AJ Epenesa are great options as well. Both of them are stronger than Reddick against the run and should have a little more juice than Jordan does. Yetur Gross-Matos or Jadeveon Clowney would be looking to sign someone who is cheap, but who can hold up to their size.Â
However, the best option is Michael Danna. Danna played for the Kansas City Chiefs, so Ryan Poles is familiar with him. He played in a defense similar to Dennis Allen. He is long-armed and can defend the run. While he is mostly unsigned due to injury questions, he is also only 28 years old, which is much younger than a lot of the other options available. He will not cost a lot and there is enough upside to make this bet. The Bears should sign Danna.Â
