Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III was recently listed by Sports Illustrated as the Bears most likely breakout candidate. This comes as no surprise to many, given that the Bears are expecting a significant leap from the year 2 wideout. Burden has received national attention for his role in the Bears wild 2025 season and playoff run, and it's with good reason.

Bears head coach Ben Johnson has publicly praised Burden and his abilities on numerous occasions. His praise has consistently centered on the young receiver's work habits and not only his ability on the field. Coaches don't typically hand out that kind of praise lightly, and especially not this early in the preseason workouts.

Luther Burden III has already shown flashes of becoming a star

Burden had several games last season where he really shined, but none rise higher than his 138 yard performance against the 49ers with an honorable mention for a 101 yard game against Dallas in September. Burden's brand of speed, versatility, and playmaking ability gives him the tools to become a favorite weapon of Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson alike.

Now that DJ Moore has departed to the Bills, the door is wide open for Rome Odunze and Burden to raise their ceiling. Defenses will still need to account for Odunze, Burden, Loveland, and possibly even Cole Kmet all at the same time. Burden's ability to get open could potentially make the difference Burden needs. A breakout would most likely come down to his talent colliding with the right opportunities, and 2026 is shaping up to look like exactly that.

For Burden to be recognized on a national stage is nothing surprising. National analysts are consistently talking about him in a productive manner that is full of expectation. When you show as much potential as he did last season, particularly in the back half of the year, a breakout prediction is only the natural follow up. If Burden continues on the trajectory he's on, he could potentially become one of the Chicago and the NFL's hottest receivers.
