Caleb Williams Reveals Role He'll Play in Bears' Head Coach Search
By Jovan Alford
With the 2024 NFL regular season wrapping up this weekend, the Chicago Bears will likely start their search for their next head coach. This season has been a disaster for the Bears, who have lost 10-straight games and fired then-head coach Matt Eberflus after their Week 13 loss to the Detroit Lions.
Bears fans thought things would be different in 2024 with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, but it was the same old story. Whoever Chicago hires next as head coach has to get this franchise back on track and help Williams take another step in his development.
With that in mind, there’s a thought that maybe the Bears will get Williams’ thoughts on the head coaching search since he’s their future franchise QB. But fans shouldn’t get too happy with that idea.
According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, Williams said on Wednesday only what they will allow him, but he doesn’t expect to have much of a say on the coaching search.
"Whatever, I guess, they allow. I’m not … I know that I’m a rookie and a young guy, so if they make decisions without me, that’s their job to make decisions and make those types of decisions. If they make a decision like that, just hope and believe and faith that those guys upstairs, they make the right decisions. And so that’s that. If I’m a part of it, then great."
Williams is taking the right approach as he’s a rookie and a young guy inside the organization. It would be different if this was his second or third year and the Bears were looking for a new head coach.
However, after seeing the Eberflus hire flop, the Bears’ front office/leadership team cannot mess up this next hire. At the same time, one would hope Bears’ brass takes Williams and the offense into consideration when picking the next guy because the Bears have talent.
There’s a lot of talent at the skill positions once you figure out the offensive line. They are ranked 29th in scoring offense (17.9 points per game) this season, which is unthinkable given the talent.
The Bears went with a defensive-minded coach in Eberflus and we saw how things played out over the last few seasons. Maybe, Chicago will change it up and go after an offensive guy this time around.
