Caleb Williams is walking into his third season as the star quarterback of the Chicago Bears. There's something different about the Bears franchise player this year. When speaking with the media during the start of training camp press conferences, Williams seemed more comfortable in his skin than he has before. It made for a good change.
Williams has always projected confidence. That's been a key element to his game since before you ever even heard his name. Williams famously called the Bears punter at the time of his drafting to tell him he wouldn't be very busy. (For reference, the Bears punted 24 times in 2024) The upcoming season is one where the Bears, and Williams specifically, have something to prove. This new confidence is something to be taken in stride.
Caleb Williams is learning how to get even more from his athleticism
"Yeah, just figuring out my schedule a little bit better. When I'm gonna train, when I'm gonna relax, how I'm gonna train, you know, what works best for me and my body, how to eat, and things like that. Lost some weight, so it's good. I'm excited about that. Be able to move a little bit better, be, you know, be smoother."Caleb Williams
Williams was already one of the most agile and slippery quarterbacks in the NFL. To think of a faster, lighter, and yet stronger Caleb would be something to be feared. When pressed about how much weight he lost, Williams indicated between ten and fifteen pounds.Â
This is exactly the type of thing that shows Williams’ dedication to this team, and to this city. He's a natural representative of Chicago, and he's growing into it well.Â
Coach Johnson and Williams have been completely consistent in their messaging of making the mechanical things second nature. The commitment is something to be admired.Â
Williams has already proven he can threaten defenses with his legs, and becoming lighter and smoother should only make that part of his game more dangerous. If his offseason changes translate to the field, the Bears may be getting the most versatile version of their quarterback yet.
