There is plenty of debate about where Caleb Williams stacks up amongst the league's best quarterbacks. If you buy into his progression and potential, you see a potential elite player. However, a low completion percentage and poor rookie numbers have others remaining dubious.

Perhaps the most recent ranking by Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports can get fans to find some common ground.

Caleb Williams finds middle ground in quarterback tier ranking

Rather than doing an actual ranking, DeArdo went for a tier strategy. His tiers show why Williams is such a hotly debated quarterback.

As DeArdo has it, there are five elite quarterbacks who are transcendent talents. These are the quarterbacks who truly matter and change the outcome of games. That is Matthew Stafford, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow.

However, after that, there is a tier of 12 quarterbacks. These are the borderline stars. In some games, they can be stars, but in other games, they can struggle. The lack of high-end consistency is what separates this group from the other five. This sounds like the tier that Williams belongs in.

The tier includes Jalen Hurts, Sam Darnold, Bo Nix, Jayden Daniels, Jared Goff, Brock Purdy, Jordan Love, Justin Herbert, Dak Prescott, Drake Maye, and Trevor Lawrence. You can rank them within the tier however you want.

Some weeks and some matchups will rank higher than other weeks and other matchups. That is why they are in this tier. There also might be a quibble with one or two, but as a whole, most would agree that the players on this list have star potential, but do not always show it.

So, that is why the debates at quarterback get so hot at this time of the year. If you have one of the top five guys, you are arguing where they belong in that specific ranking. However, if you are one of the other 12, you are in a debate with a wide range of outcomes.

If you see Williams as the sixth-best quarterback, or the 18th-best quarterback, it is not very distinguishable according to this ranking. However, on a list that is the difference between near elite and below average.

That is what makes quarterback play so tricky. Some weeks, Williams does look elite, and some weeks he looks below average. So, the tier ranging from six to 18 is perfect for Williams and all of these other quarterbacks.
