Colston Loveland was the splash pick of the 2025 draft for the Chicago Bears. The selection surprised everyone, including Loveland, as he was not expected to be the first tight end off of the board. But the selection went through anyway, and Loveland came to play in Chicago.
Loveland recently expressed surprise that the Bears selected him while speaking on an episode of “Bussin with the Boys” podcast. He also indicated that he was under the impression that if he wasn't selected by the Bears, then the Chargers would have taken him 22nd overall. Loveland had previously played for the Michigan Wolverines, where Jim Harbaugh spent the better part of a decade as the Head Coach.
Now, firmly embedded into the NFL, Loveland can reflect on how glad he is that he came to Chicago to play football.
Forged in Fire
The NFL can be the wild west sometimes. It's a multi-headed beast that changes with the times, not necessarily always with the popular vote. One of the more recent changes in the NFL has been the development of the tight end and how offenses have altered the way they use them. It may come as a difficulty to say for many modern NFL fans, but Brady and Gronk changed the game.
The Brady and Gronkowski comparison is what I'd like to focus on. They created an environment where the whole NFL knew how Brady was going to target Gronk, and nobody could stop them. It made for many remotes through TVs, and it made many many Patriots fans tear up.
Fast forward a single dynasty, and we can take a look at Pat Mahomes and Travis Kelce. Undeniably the most effective QB/TE in the game right now. No matter how many times they do it, the NFL just can't seem to stop that combo.
Williams and Loveland have only just begun their courtship. They've been together only a single season, and yet, over the course of the 2025 campaign, their chemistry on the field became undeniable. Loveland went from unexpected first rounder to top Bears receiver in a single season, and had a slow start! If that's not impressive, I'm not sure what is.
Obviously we can't go making this comparison with any accuracy until Chicago's pair has a couple shiny rings to show off. But the first step in 2025 was an encouraging one. Whether Williams and Loveland ever reach the heights of Mahomes and Kelce remains to be seen. But after just one season together, Bears fans have every reason to believe they're watching something special take shape.
