Bulls Bust Could Still Be Replaced Before August

Taking a glance at the Chicago Bulls roster is a frustrating journey down the memory lane of head-scratching moves, frustrating trades, and terrible front office decisions. While Bulls fans are all too familiar with the series of events that led them to many seasons in play-in purgatory, no move is as confusing as when the Bulls gave Patrick Williams a five-year, $90 million contract extension, with a player option in the fifth year.

Only a year into that deal, and that contract already looks like a disaster for the Bulls. Despite not showing much during his rookie contract, Williams got paid like a starter on a long-term deal. He failed to live up to the salary last season, averaging 9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2 assists in 25 minutes per game in 63 appearances. His shooting splits of 39.7/35.3/72.3 left plenty to be desired.

Bulls Must End the Patrick Williams Era

While the Bulls are still not ready to win at the highest levels, it behooves the organization to turn the page on the Patrick Williams saga. The 23-year-old Florida State product has unfortunately worn out his welcome in Chicago, and a fresh start may be needed for both sides. The former fourth-overall pick can have another opportunity under a new head coach and in a different organization, while the Bulls can give his minutes to Matas Buzelis and rookie Noa Essengue.

Even though Williams is severely overpaid, he is still young enough and plays a premium position that he may still have suitors. Perhaps a team with cap space, like the Brooklyn Nets or the Utah Jazz, would like to bring him in without giving up any assets to acquire him.

The Bulls shouldn't be too worried about getting anything of value since gaining financial flexibility, creating a roster spot, and more playing time for their young players would be beneficial regardless of the return in a potential deal.
