The Chicago Blackhawks may be entering the most important phase of their rebuild yet. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson recently commented on his search for players that could bolster the Blackhawks lineup. For years now, the Blackhawks have been gathering resources and biding their time while allowing their prospects to develop. The Blackhawks front office now believes it has identified several specific needs that the team needs to address before making the push to be competitive in the Central Division.
The Blackhawks know where they need help
This offseason has seen the Blackhawks, and more specifically Davidson himself, has been more aggressive this summer. With the team now identifying spots on the roster that need addressing, it signals a shift in the approach the Blackhawks are taking. After six months of rebuilding, the team appears ready to take the next step.
"It didn't go quite the way we were hoping to give us that full shot in the arm, that 'set it and forget it' feeling. So it's probably something we want to at least explore."Kyle Davidson
With this information in mind, Davidson believes the top need the Blackhawks have is a veteran defensive player. The Blackhawks all boast being 24 or younger, and Davidson would be of the mind that the team could benefit from some leadership on the ice.
That's not to say that the Blackhawks don't have a long way to go. They finished last season with only 72, narrowly missing being the worst team in Hockey. Only the Canucks posted a worse record, an impressive 58 points.
Now that the Blackhawks are confident in their needs, our heads need to turn to the how. With the team holding the 4th overall pick, that gives the Blackhawks a significant amount of capital to wield. The team is in a good position, certainly one they didn't have last season. Davidson appears ready to explore different options to get the job done.
The Blackhawks are still far from contention, but the conversation around the team is beginning to change. Rather than simply accumulating prospects and draft picks, Davidson is now evaluating ways to strengthen specific areas of the roster. Whether that comes through a trade, free agency, or another creative move, this offseason could prove to be one of the most important of Chicago's rebuild.
