The Chicago Blackhawks finally made things official with Roman Kantserov on Thursday, but this signing represents far more than simply adding another prospect to the organization. Kantserov has been a known commodity in hockey the last few years while playing in the KHL since 2022.
The Blackhawks have been in the process of acquiring Kantserov for some time now, but with his contract in the KHL now terminated, he was free to sign with Chicago. The 21 year old forward signed a three-year entry level deal with the Blackhawks that carries a $1.075 million cap hit. During the 2025-2026 season, Kantserov posted 64 points on 36 goals, leading the league, and the most by any player under the age of 22 in the KHL.
Eddie Olczyk sees the talent, but warns patience will be necessary
Eddie Olczyk, the Blackhawks legendary former announcer recently joined the Mulley and Haugh show on Chicago's 104.3 The Score radio station where he commented on the recent signing. He acknowledged that the Blackhawks are adding players with certain game-breaking talent, but also cautioned that patience may be necessary for the young core of this team to really find their stride as one cohesive team.
"“You need game-breakers. You need guys that are difference makers to be able to win in this league. It certainly sounds like this youngster has that ability, but, he's still a young guy and you gotta get through the NHL for a period of time before you're able to just do what you want at will.”"Eddie Olczyk
Leading the KHL in goals is no small feat, and it's even more of an accomplishment to do it at such a young age. That's exactly what Eddie O means when he says you need "game-breakers". The ones that are able to go out on the ice and apply consistent pressure to the opponent, the ones that are able to produce as a team.
Kantserov's goal scoring ability is an immediate asset to the Blackhawks, who have been trying to acquire finishers for some time now. Eddie O goes on to mention that the KHL and the NHL are vastly different beasts, and the pacing of it can be hard on young guys like Kantserov.
The Blackhawks still have a very long road ahead of them, but bringing in young talent like Kantserov is certainly a step in the right direction. Chicago doesn't need Kantserov to skate in and dominate, but rather they'd like him to grown and develop with the team to serve as a foundational pillar. But as Eddie O points out, the transition from exciting prospect to reliable NHL producer is rarely an easy one.
