Now that the Chicago Bears 53-man roster is set, what are the biggest takeaways?

Biggest Takeaways From Chicago Bears Initial 53-Man Roster

Roschon Johnson won the RB3 Job

The question throughout the summer was who would win the third running back job. It came down to Johnson against Salvon Ahmed. Ahmed was the better rusher in the preseason. However, as head coach Ben Johnson made it clear, the better fit for the roster was a special teams asset who could block. That was Johnson.

A Fourth Tight End over a Sixth Receiver

Another question was who the sixth receiver would be. It was down to Kaden Davis and Scotty Miller. The answer was neither. They kept a fourth tight end, Hayden Large, instead. The rookie UDFA confirms the idea that the team will lean into heavy tight end usage.

Both Tackle Losers Cut

Jedrick Wills and Kiran Amegadjie appeared to be losing the starting battle at left tackle. However, that cost both of them a roster spot. Theo Benedet will be the swing tackle, Ozzy Trapilo will get healthy, and Braxton Jones will start across from Darnell Wright.

This allowed the team to keep six interior offensive linemen.

Jayden Loving Wins a Spot

With the team trading Gervon Dexter, it appears as though Kentavius Street will start next to Grady Jarrett. It also pushed rookie UDFA Loving from a roster hopeful to someone who made the initial team.

No Marcus Davenport

When the team signed Davenport, head coach Ben Johnson made it clear that he was not an answer to their problems. They signed him to see how he fit. So far, he was not able to beat out Jamree Kromah or Daniel Hardy for a roster spot. He might circle back to the practice squad, and he might not be fully healthy, which would have added to his release.

Terell Smith Released

The Bears' former fifth-round pick looked good when he was on the field; the issue is that he was not on the field nearly enough. Smith was banged up in training camp after missing all of last year. With one year left on his rookie deal, the team decided to push him to waivers.

Both Elijah Hicks and Skyler Thomas make the roster

Thomas looked like a lock if Hicks was not healthy. Hicks ended up being healthy enough to make the team, and Thomas still got the nod. That speaks to how well he played this summer.
