Jaylon Johnson is one of the Bears' staple players on the defensive side of the ball. Head coach Ben Johnson recently spoke at a press conference during this season's minicamp. Johnson emphasized that while he hasn't coached Johnson during his peak years, he's aware of the caliber of player that the 27 year old cornerback can bring to the table.

During his time with the Bears, Johnson has experienced an absolute downpour of defensive coordinators. He's worked with six separated coordinators in his six seasons of service. It's remarkable that Johnson was able to perform as well as he has considering the coach in his ear has had a different voice very year.

Ben Johnson knows what Jaylon Johnson can be

"I don't know that I ever saw himself, so it's hard for me to gauge that, um, particularly this time of year, but I think he had a good day yesterday out there. He's been able to stack a few of those throughout the OTAs, and I think his mind's probably getting more confident in terms of the movements he's making. He's a vital part of what we want to do."

Johnson goes on to mention his awareness of Jaylon being a Pro Bowl caliber player. Despite battling injuries and playing under multiple different defensive schemes, Jaylon has gone on to become one of Chicago's most reliable defenders. It will be a large relief to enter a second year of the pros without needing to wrap your head around an entirely new defensive concept.

Despite being sidelined for ten games last season, Johnson returned to minicamp in good form. He's previously stated that it would require the whole offseason to fully recover from a muscle repair surgery. That didn't stop him from intercepting Caleb Williams twice during drills.

Johnson has already established himself as one of the NFL's better cornerbacks when healthy. The Bears are counting on him to be that player again as they enter a pivotal season under Ben Johnson and Dennis Allen. If his recovery continues on its current trajectory, Chicago's defense could have its cornerstone defender back at full strength when Week 1 arrives.
