Ben Johnson's summer plans should excite Bears fans

While players enjoy the break, Chicago's head coach is already focused on building the next phase of the Bears' offense.

With the conclusion of minicamp, the Bears are headed for a six-week hiatus right as things started to feel back in the swing. The Bears offseason programs may be over, but head coach Ben Johnson's work is far from finished. Johnson has discussed the idea of the minicamp being the starting point from the perspective of fundamentals. This has been the time to establish those close familial ties between new teammates, and a time for the roots to be laid.

Johnson's comments on the six-week break shows that he's clearly not planning on taking much time off for himself. With the new season rapidly approaching, it's excellent to see a Chicago head coach so invested in the game and getting as prepared as possible for the upcoming season.

Ben Johnson isn't taking the summer off

"I've always found the summer to be one of the better times in terms of getting ahead for the season. We haven't done a whole lot exotic here this offseason. It's been, as I've talked about, fundamentals, technique. We're running fairly standard formations and plays at this point as we're trying to build the blocks from the ground up. And, you know, this offseason, I'll be able to deep dive into some areas of interest for myself."

Things were simple here for a reason. Johnson has been doing this for a long time, and he knows this isn't the time of the year to really light the fires. This is the time to acknowledge the slow burn of prepping for the season. Having this time to begin assessing the team and where Chicago stands is invaluable to a coach planning training camp. It's also an excellent chance for the team to naturally develop leaders in the locker room and on the field.

Many pundits and media outlets normally try to pull big takeaways and large sweeping stories from these practices, but they're exactly as coach Johnson said. They're simple, nothing exotic. This will serve as the starting point from which the team will build. Coach Johnson isn't spending time trying to maintain the status quo, he's actively looking for ways to evolve the offense before training camp begins.

Johnson's comments should excite Bears fans, not because of what the team showed during the spring, but because of what they intentionally held back. If this offseason was about building the foundation, the next six weeks may be where Johnson begins constructing the version of the offense he hopes can take Chicago to another level in 2026.
