The Chicago Bears already have their primary pass catchers set. Between Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III, not to mention Colston Loveland, the Bears receiving core is all but set in stone. Zavion Thomas brings an interesting skill set to the table, and it's worth noting that it's unique.

Not all offensive contributors need to appear in a traditional capacity. Ben Johnson has been known to embrace that sort of alternative mindset. Johnson has been known to value motion, speed, and players capable of creating yards after the catch. Even if it's done in an unconventional way, the production would still be there.

Ben Johnson’s offense could simplify Zavion Thomas’ transition

Having that sort of dual role is something that's been widely utilized across the league to great success in players like Deebo Samuel. For a rookie trying to make a name for himself on an already well established offense, playing that part can be an essential ingredient. It can provide a path to consistent snaps and field time while allowing a lane to actually show production in a real way.

A gadget player is almost always an asset to a football team. Having a unique skill set on the field creates an environment of uncertainty because defenders simply can't predict what's about to happen. In the world of NFL defenses and the the entire idea of deception being fundamental, its extremely difficult to change on the fly like you need to when a gadget player is heavily in use.

Thomas does not need to emerge as one of the Bears’ top receiving options in order to carve out a meaningful role. Chicago already has established weapons throughout the offense, which could allow the rookie to focus on doing a few specific things well early in his career. In many ways, that could be the ideal environment for his development.

If Ben Johnson and the coaching staff can consistently create touches for Thomas in space, the rookie may become a valuable complementary piece sooner than expected. Whether it comes through motion packages, screens, or special teams opportunities, his athleticism gives the Bears another layer of unpredictability. That type of versatility can quietly become an important part of a modern NFL offense.
