Ben Johnson has the potential to be an elite NFL coach, but not quite yet

One incredible season as the Bears' head coach isn't enough to leapfrog coaches with years of sustained success and Super Bowl resumes.

Ben Johnson might be known as one of the hottest coaching names in the NFL, but he is not one of the ten best coaches in the NFL yet, according to Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report. Davenport ranked the ten best coaches in the NFL and did not include the Chicago Bears head coach.

Is Ben Johnson a top ten Head coach in the NFL already?

The obvious going against Johnson is longevity. Yes, he took a team that had a top ten pick and turned them into a team that won a playoff game. However, he only did it one time. The NFL has seen plenty of coaches come in hot and shake up the NFL, only to be thrown back down.

Even in Chicago, the Bears saw Matt Nagy perform a similar turnaround before being fired just a couple of seasons later. So, while it is fun to get excited about Johnson and his stock is trending up, it is hard to get him inside the top ten.

More than that, five of the top six coaches on the list have a Super Bowl ring. Sean McVay and Andy Reid are the top two coaches. Reid has won three rings, and McVay has one of his own.

Kyle Shanahan is the only coach in the top five without a Super Bowl trophy. However, he has been to the big game twice as a head coach and was the noted architect of the Atlanta Falcons' offense that lost a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl.

Mike MacDonald, Sean Payton, and Nick Sirianni round out the top six. Johnson simply does not have the resume that these names do.

Mike Vrabel came in seventh. While he is new to the New England Patriots, he had a resume that was strong with the Tennessee Titans. So, when you combine that with his run to the Super Bowl last year, it takes away the one-year wonder label.

Jim Harbaugh was eighth, and he has a Super Bowl appearance in the past. He also has two playoff appearances with the Los Angeles Chargers. Dan Campbell is ninth. While Bears fans think that Johnson was the mastermind behind Campbell, he still has a track record that Johnson does not.

Lastly is DeMeco Ryans. Ryans took over a Texans team that was directionless, and the Texans have now won a playoff game in three straight seasons. Johnson was great last year, but he needs to prove more to join these great coaches.
