Ben Johnson Decides Fate of 4 More Bears Coaching Holdovers on Tuesday

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson reportedly elected to retain four more staffers from the previous coaching staff.

The NFL offseason is finally upon us and the Chicago Bears are hard at work preparing for the Ben Johnson regime after falling short of expectations under Matt Eberflus in 2024.

This is Johnson's first head coaching job, though he's built a sterling reputation around the NFL thanks to his spectacular work as the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator. After years of incompetent decision-making from the team's leader, the Bears seemingly finally have a coach worth his mettle.

As Johnson fills out his staff ahead of the offseason, he reportedly decided on Tuesday to keep four coaches from the previous staff. This not only keeps some familiar faces in the building but gives Johnson some trusted voices who are already familiar with the roster, helping facilitate a smooth transition in the coming months.

Ben Johnson Retains Four Bears Coaches From Previous Regime

According to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic, Johnson elected to keep Zach Cable, Kevin Koch, Kenny Norton III and Robbie Picazo.

Cable served as an offensive quality control coach, Koch and Norton were both defensive quality control coaches, and Picazo was an assistant quarterbacks and wide receivers coach. Fishbain didn't specifically outline whether or not the four men would retain the same roles, though it's fair to assume they'll at least coach in a similar capacity.

All four are relatively inexperienced, having all been in their first few seasons coaching professional football. Johnson's gamble here is that these are promising individuals who can help usher in a new era of Chicago football. Building a strong foundation is one of the best ways for franchises to turn things around, and the Bears need to continue solidifying Caleb Williams' supporting cast to ensure they're competitive in 2025 and beyond.

Finally, the organization is making calculated decisions instead of short-sighted ones. Johnson's track record speaks for itself and whether or not these specific moves work out, he's already pushing the franchise toward a promising future in ways his predecessors never did.
