Ben Johnson Just Bagged Another Big Win for Bears' Coaching Staff
By Jovan Alford
New Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson has quickly assembled his coaching staff for the 2025 season. Most of the attention has been on Chicago’s new coordinators, bringing in Declan Doyle (offensive) and Dennis Allen (defensive).
However, the new Bears head coach has retained some coaches from the previous regime in the Windy City and brought some Detroit guys with him. On Monday, Johnson is on the verge of another hire for his staff, which has the fanbase fired up.
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears are expected to hire Dan Roushar as their new offensive line coach. The Bears’ offensive line was one of the worst in the league this season as rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked 68 times.
The 64-year-old Roushar has been the last two years at Tulane University as their offensive line coach. However, Roushar has NFL experience, spending 10 years with the New Orleans Saints. He worked with multiple position groups with the Saints, including the offensive line between 2016 and 2020.
Over those four years coaching the Saints’ offensive line, Roushar helped OT Terron Armstead, OT Ryan Ramczyk, OG Larry Watford, and OT/OG Andrus Peat become Pro Bowl and All-Pro linemen.
Bears fans will hope for something similar with this current set of offensive linemen, which has a couple of good players like center Coleman Shelton and right tackle Darnell Wright. In only his second year, Wright is developing into one of the better tackles in the league.
The former first-round pick allowed six sacks across 1021 offensive snaps this season. But he still had a good 82.2 run-blocking (ranked seventh among 141 qualified tackles), and a 75.4 pass-block grade.
If the Bears want to take that next step in 2025, they must improve in the trenches and Johnson knows this after seeing the Lions dominate at the point of attack.
