Ben Johnson all but confirms Bears’ plan at wide receiver after NFL Draft

Chicago appears confident in its current mix of receivers despite offseason departures and lingering outside concern.

One of the big questions that will need to be answered is whether the Chicago Bears did enough in their wide receiver room or not. The team lost DJ Moore and Olamide Zaccehaus this offseason. While they brought in both Khaliff Raymond and Zavion Thomas, the name values are not quite adding up to even swaps. So, fans fear that the unit is worse.

Are the Chicago Bears set at wide receiver?

Ben Johnson was asked his thoughts on the wide receiver this offseason, and he noted that he is mostly happy with the group. However, he also said that the team will remain open to adding more to the room.

To be fair, it is hard to see this being a big-name player. As Johnson mentioned, he likes the versatility in the group. Rome Odunze is bigger, and down the field, Luther Burden is quicker and tougher to get down with the ball in his hands. Khaliff Raymond has quick speed, Zavion Thomas has long speed. Jadae Walker is a big receiver. They have different types.

More than that, the team not only expects jumps from Burden and Odunze, but they are also looking for Colston Loveland to be a bigger piece of the offense. So, replacing two legitimate receiving threats with outside names was not quite as big a need when you expected the in-house options to step up.

Still, the Bears also signed Raymond, who is familiar with Ben Johnson from Detroit. Raymond had the best years of his career under Johnson. The Bears drafted Thomas higher than fans expected, so fans still see a hole here. However, they drafted him because they like his ability and they see a role for him next year.

Walker won over the coaching staff last year, and they appear to be ready to give him another chance this season. When you consider the coaching staff is higher on the depth chart than the fans and media, it is hard to see a bigger-name receiver coming in.

If an injury occurred or if Walker or Thomas did not take the steps that were expected of them, the team would have to make a move. However, the caliber of player might be more in line with replacing Thomas or Walker, or pushing one of those two, and not a major upgrade over those two. It will be interesting to see if they do add.
