Polarizing Bears Vet's Days Are Numbered Despite Surviving Trade Deadline
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Bears shockingly weren’t super active at the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, only trading veteran running back Khalil Herbert to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
Bears fans weren’t surprised to see Herbert traded as the veteran running back saw his playing time decrease this season. However, veteran offensive lineman Nate Davis was one player who wasn’t moved at the deadline.
Davis’ name popped up in trade rumors before the deadline and Chicago was reportedly open to absorbing some of his salary to move him. But the Bears had no takers for Davis, who signed a three-year, $30 million contract last season.
The 28-year-old offensive lineman was supposed to be a major upgrade but has been a major disappointment. Davis has seen his playing time decrease this season, to the point where he was demoted after Chicago’s Week 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
The former Titans offensive lineman was ultimately replaced by veteran Matt Pryor, who was signed to a one-year deal by the Bears. Pryor has played well in Davis’ spot, which is not good for his long-term future with the squad.
According to Pro Football Focus, Pryor was the Bears’ highest-graded offensive player in their Week 9 loss to the Arizona Cardinals (81.3). The veteran right guard also had a stellar 86.6 pass block grade.
Davis has a potential out in 2025, which opens the door for the Bears to move on from the vet in the offseason. However, for the Bears to potentially move on from Davis, they need to see more consistency from Pryor or have another backup plan.
