The Chicago Bears were rumored to be an option to trade an excess tight end all season. However, with Cole Kmet injured and rookie Sam Roush raising questions, the team is starting to hear rumors about adding another tight end at the trade deadline.
One name to keep an eye on is Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert.
Chicago Bears could trade for Goedert
The Bears have emerged as the perfect option for Goedert, according to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report. Knox notes that Goedert has a tradable contract and will make a strong trade asset.
“Goedert is also 31 years old, though, and is playing on a one-year, $7 million deal,” wrote Knox, discussing a deal. “Trading him now would make sense if Roseman is ready to pack it in for the year. He'd probably net a high Day 3 selection in a trade.”
He adds that the Bears are a fit due to how often they use multiple tight end formations.
“Ben Johnson has regularly used formations that feature two or three tight ends this season, and while Kmet wasn't a focal point of the passing attack, he was a great ancillary target who provided offensive flexibility,” added Knox. “Goedert would be a great replacement for the remainder of the season.”
There are two flaws to the logic. First, while Roush has not taken the steps needed in his rookie season, the team still invested a third-round pick in him. Ben Johnson has noted that he is high on Roush and that he is going to give him a chance to earn more work. It would be hard for them to get turned off so quickly by Roush.
More than that, the Bears actually might be best leaning into more three-wide receiver looks. According to SumerSports, the Bears run two-tight end looks at the third-highest rate in the NFL. However, they are 16th in passing efficiency and 28th in rushing efficiency with this look.
They add a third wide receiver instead of a second tight end at the 25th-highest rate. They are eighth in passing efficiency and fourth in rushing efficiency out of these formations. So, the tight ends were already not living up to their billing.
The Bears could try a lesser tight end, or even add an older player like Goedert. Or, they can lean into the three wide receiver sets that tend to work best.
