Bears Stud Shares His Hopes for Team's Next Head Coach
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Bears will be searching for a new head coach in the offseason after firing then-head coach Matt Eberflus last month.
The Bears thought Eberflus would lead the franchise to a couple of playoff berths in his tenure, but it didn’t happen. Therefore, Chicago handed the head coaching job to then-interim offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
Brown’s debut as the Bears head coach did not go well in Week 14 as Chicago got hammered 38-13 by the San Francisco 49ers. However, Brown has a chance to change the narrative about his team on Monday night when Chicago plays the Minnesota Vikings.
Looking ahead to the offseason, the Bears’ front office must make the right head coach decision after bungling the hire of Eberflus. Luckily enough for Chicago, a few head coaching candidates will be available.
The Bears’ front office brass will make the ultimate decision, but it wouldn’t hurt for them to get some input from their players.
On the latest episode of “The Eighty-Five With Cole Kmet,” the Bears tight end was asked by CHGO Bears host Adam Hoge what he looks for in a head coach from a player’s perspective.
Kmet first mentioned how a coach presents himself to the team, highlighting confidence and decision-making. The veteran tight end also brought up how a head coach talks to his players in a team meeting, what’s his message, and if he believes in his message.
The former second-round pick said that’s how you get guys to buy in when a head coach can deliver a message and believes in it. That message must be able to command the room and allow everyone to know what’s expected of them.
The 25-year-old tight end laid out a simple list of wants and needs from a head coach that you hope the Bears’ leadership takes and uses when interviewing various candidates.
Chicago needs someone who can lead and set the tone, which is something Eberflus didn’t do as this season progressed.
Based on what Kmet said on his show, Mike Vrabel might be the perfect head coach for the Bears, which has the pieces on both sides of the ball. Vrabel did well as a head coach for the Tennessee Titans and can come right in to get this team back on track.
