The Chicago Bears were active on Day 1 of free agency when the legal tampering period opened up. They infused the defense with talent by adding Coby Bryant and Devin Bush, but they also saw some players leave town.
Receiver Olamide Zaccheaus signed with the Atlanta Falcons, opening up the door for the WR3 spot. It looked like Jahdae Walker was going to be a winner in this scenario and have an increased role in 2026, but those hopes immediately came crashing down.
On Tuesday, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that the Bears are adding receiver Kalif Raymond on a one-year, $5.1 million deal. In addition, FOX Sports' Greg Auman said that this was "an Antwaan Randle El signing."
Randle El was Raymond's wide receiver coach with the Lions (2021-24), and it's clear he wanted to reunite with his former player. That's without mentioning that Ben Johnson was the offensive coordinator during that time. Raymond's addition spells bad news for Walker going into 2026, as his path to being the clear WR3 is no longer there.
Jahdae Walker’s Hype Is Back Down After Bears Sign Kalif Raymond
Raymond is a player who can be a return man but has found success in this scheme, as shown in Detroit. His best days in this league came under Johnson and Randle El. He'll look to recapture that in the Windy City.
Season | Targets | Catches | Receiving Yards | Receiving Touchdowns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
2021 | 71 | 48 | 576 | 4 |
2022 | 64 | 47 | 616 | 0 |
2023 | 44 | 35 | 489 | 1 |
2024 | 22 | 17 | 215 | 1 |
His numbers took a hit in 2024 after missing five games, but those stats suggest he has been part of the gameplan in this offense.
As for Walker, he was active in nine games last season, starting in one. He posted six catches (10 targets) for 87 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Walker was fifth on the team in snaps at receiver (86) in 2025. Granted, he's a different kind of receiver, standing at 6'3" compared to Raymond, who is 5'8".
The edge Raymond has over Walker is the rapport with both Randle El and Johnson. He can also play a role on special teams as a punt and kick returner. In his career, Raymond has three punt return touchdowns.
With Zaccheaus no longer in the fold, who had 617 total snaps last season, it's easy to see Raymond being asked to fill in over Walker. Chicago still likes the 23-year-old, but this acquisition shows they don't fully trust him yet. He'll have to take some strides this offseason, but the Bears brought Raymond in for a reason. And that will have a negative ripple effect on Walker in 2026.
